EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty member Dr. Peter Myers, professor of political science, is the only person in Wisconsin to receive a 2011 Summer Stipend award from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Myers will spend the summer researching and writing on issues of race in America, specifically the historical, political and philosophic idea of color blindness.

"For over a century, the idea now commonly named 'color blindness' has been an inspiring and unifying principle for the mainstream of anti-racist thought in America," Myers said. "However, this idea has lately become the focal point of intensifying controversy."

There are important issues at stake, and this research may help refine current debates on race in America and repair current divisions, Myers said.

"By examining color-blindness, I mean to develop and assess the case for rededicating ourselves to this idea in the face of the pressing practical and theoretical challenges currently confronting it," Myers said.

Myers has authored two books on the political philosophies of John Locke and Frederick Douglass and various essays in the fields of modern and American political thought, including a chapter on Martin Luther King Jr. in a widely used anthology.

Dr. Patricia Kleine, UW-Eau Claire provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, said Myers' award highlights the university's ongoing tradition of academic excellence.

"Prestigious national fellowships underscore the academic vitality of UW-Eau Claire, stimulating faculty research and scholarship and, ultimately, enriching students' learning experiences," Kleine said.

The provost's office provides an incentive program for the high-profile Summer Stipend award from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Faculty and academic staff who are interested in fellowships are invited to contact the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for assistance at orsp@uwec.edu or 715-836-3405.
