LGBTQ studies group prepares for Eau Queer Film Festival in October

RELEASED: June 23, 2011

Participants in the women's studies travel seminar visited Pink Triangle Park in San Francisco as part of the Castro Historical and Cultural Tour.

EAU CLAIRE — A contingent from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is in California to participate in the Frameline Film Festival and Pride celebration as part of a women's studies course titled "LGBTQA Studies: San Francisco Travel Seminar."

Twelve students and two student mentors, accompanied by Ellen Mahaffy, assistant professor of communication and journalism; and Dr. Pamela Forman, associate professor of sociology; are immersed in Pride Celebration week. They hope to discover and document the culture and experience, and broaden their understanding of LGBTQ communities.

In addition to their own filmmaking, students are again screening many films at the Frameline LGBT International Film Festival. Last year's visit resulted in the creation of the first Eau Queer Film Festival, a screening of documentary films on LGBTQ topics. Forman and Mahaffy screened their 10-minute short documentary/trailer about last year's group's experience of attending and creating their own films for the screenings at UW-Eau Claire. The film was shown to a sold-out theater June 19 during a session called "Generations: Youth and Elders Making Movies."

"The students have developed their own topics, including LGBT communities, religion, and the deaf and hearing impaired communities in relationship to Eau Claire, and are amazed at the warm reception they've received while making contacts, conducting interviews and gaining access to archival material for their short films," Mahaffy said.

Students will finish the films in post-production when they return to Eau Claire for the remainder of their course work, and their films will be debuted at the Second Annual Eau Queer Film Festival in October.

To follow the students' experiences, access their contributions to the festival's blog on the UW-Eau Claire blog page. For more information, contact Ellen Mahaffy at 715-836-4762 or mahaffe@uwec.edu.
