Partnership with UW-Extension launches first fully online undergraduate degree

RELEASED: June 21, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will offer the UW System's first bachelor of professional studies degree and UW-Eau Claire's first fully online bachelor's degree completion program beginning in the fall 2011 semester. The new bachelor of professional studies degree in organizational leadership and communication was approved June 10 by the UW System Board of Regents. Applications for fall currently are being accepted online.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers with comprehensive skills and knowledge are needed in almost every industry. In response, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Extension partnered to create the new 60-credit degree completion program, which combines communication and traditional liberal arts courses — including economics, history, philosophy, political science and sociology — with coursework from the College of Business.

According to Dr. Marty Wood, dean of the UW- Eau Claire College of Arts and Sciences, the new degree meets the needs of a population that has been underserved: students who want to finish their college degrees but are unable to take time away from work and family obligations.

"Many students who have been away from school for some time have accumulated rich life experiences that have broadened their interests beyond the specific college majors they sought when they were younger. Now they — and the businesses and communities where they work and live — stand to benefit immensely from the knowledge, competencies and skills they have gained."

The program is designed for adults who have completed an associate of arts and sciences degree at a UW System two-year campus, those who have completed a comparable associate degree or individuals with sufficient transferable credits to pursue their educational goals.

Dr. Kate Lang, UW-Eau Claire's academic director for the bachelor of professional studies degree program, noted that the program was carefully designed to provide knowledge and skills that can be applied to a variety of careers. The unique curriculum builds on the strengths and distinctive signature of UW-Eau Claire, including service-learning and faculty/student collaborative research.

"Changing workplace demands require intellectual flexibility, the ability to deal with variety and ambiguity, multicultural competence, and scientific and technological literacy," Lang said. "Students completing this degree will be ready to assume leadership positions in their professions and in their communities."

All courses will be offered in accelerated, eight-week formats. Students may enroll in one or two courses per term and focus exclusively on those topics, and if they need to take a break from their studies, they don't have to take an entire semester off.
