EAU CLAIRE —A free outdoor show by Minneapolis band Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles June 27 will highlight the third week of the Summer Events series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain site: The Cabin of Davies Center). Audience members are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic, and enjoy free popcorn.

Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles is a six-piece acoustic explosion that won City Pages' 2008 Picked to Click award for the best new band on the Twin Cities scene. The band has released three CDs in as many years: "Orange Peels and Rattlesnakes" (2008), "Special Party Time for Everybody" (2009) and "Good of That" (2010).

"Their unique songs, which combine folk and jazz with dashes of Gypsy, polka, country, and the tiniest bit of punk, appeal to just about everybody," City Pages wrote. "Armed with a ukulele and backed by a swaggering band of five of her biggest fans, Michelle is an unassuming yet commanding force. Her voice, initially shocking in its hard-edged veracity but eventually mesmerizing, swoops through the high and low ranges with ease, and is surpassed only by her talent for whistling like a joyous, note-perfect songbird. Her songs guide listeners through tales of loves won and lost, told with a cool detachment and wry sense of humor that highlight her ability to construct the perfect anti-fairy tale."

The Cedar Cultural Center described the band's music as "a unique blend of delicious sounds, a little bit of hot club jazz, a dash of the old time string band sound, and a dollop of gang vocal harmony all served over beats you can dance to. And an abundance of adorability — there is no shortage of adorability."

Jazz at Noon concerts will take place every weekday in the East Blugold Room of Davies Center. UW-Eau Claire student and alumni musicians offer jazz standards and improvisation from noon-1 p.m.

All events are free and open to the Chippewa Valley Community. A complete schedule is available online or at the Service Center, 715-836-3727. The Summer Events program is funded by the students of UW-Eau Claire and coordinated by the Activities, Involvement and Leadership office of the University Centers.
