Campus to host national intern program for music educators

RELEASED: June 6, 2011

NATS graphicEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will host the 2011 National Association of Teachers of Singing Summer Intern Program June 7-17.

The program pairs experienced and recognized master teachers of voice with talented young members of NATS in order to improve the studio teaching skills of young educators. Twelve voice teachers from around the U.S. and four master voice teachers will be in residence, and there will be events almost every day, including lectures, demonstrations, discussions and recitals. All events, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The master teachers in residence for the program will be Claudia Catania, Metropolitan Opera and Broadway; David Small, University of Texas at Austin; Christopher Arneson, Westminster Choir College; and Marietta Simpson, Indiana University. A full schedule of events and biographies may be viewed on the music and theatre arts website.

According to Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour, associate professor of music, 24 music students from UW-Eau Claire and Eau Claire area high schools also will receive voice lessons from the interns and will attend the professional recitals and lectures. The students will give a free recital at 2 p.m. June 16 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

"I was honored to be selected as a NATS intern in 2005, and it was one of the most important experiences in my teaching training, to be paired with a master teacher who evaluated my teaching technique and style," Sadeghpour said. "UW-Eau Claire is proud to host this program for 12 young teachers whose lives are about to change in a most profound way."

The event is sponsored locally by Wisconsin NATS, R|S Design, and Radiant Living Yoga and Ayurveda LLC. NATS is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world with more than 7,000 members in the U.S.,
Canada and 25 other countries.
