Justin Vernon — UW-Eau Claire graduate, Eau Claire native and leader/singer-songwriter for the much-acclaimed indie-rock group Bon Iver — was featured in an article in the June 5 issue of The New York Times Magazine.
The article shares information about Vernon's background, including his strong ties to the Chippewa Valley and to UW-Eau Claire, which The New York Times notes has "one of the most well regarded jazz studies programs in the country."
Vernon earned his bachelor's degree from UW-Eau Claire in comparative studies in religion in 2004.
Another UW-Eau Claire alumnus and Eau Claire resident, drummer Sean Carey, a 2007 music graduate, also is a member of Bon Iver. Carey performs on vocals and percussion. Find more information on Carey and his career at http://www.myspace.com/scareymusic and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._Carey.
Bon Iver's long-awaited second album is due out June 21 on the Jagjaguwar label. The group also has announced a 16-date U.S. summer tour, which kicks off July 22 and 23 at Milwaukee's Riverside Theatre.
Last month, Vernon was a guest and performed on NBC's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" and was featured in the cover story of the May 28 issue of Billboard magazine. He was the subject of a feature story in the spring 2009 issue of UW-Eau Claire's alumni magazine, The View.
