EAU CLAIRE —The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra, a newgrass
art-rock band from the Twin Cities, will kick off the Summer Events series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a free outdoor show June 13.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain site: The Cabin of Davies Center). Audience members are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic, and enjoy free popcorn.

The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra fuses original and traditional bluegrass-edged tunes with jazz and world/fusion elements. The mix ranges from accessible bluegrass tunes to extreme arrangements of East Indian ragas, with instrumentation that includes guitar, fiddle, bass and drums.

"This remarkably eclectic, stunningly tight quartet should have followers from the jam-band community, prog-rock lovers and fans of bluegrass, jazz or rock," wrote the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Jazz at Noon concerts will take place every weekday in June starting June 13. Groups featuring UW-Eau Claire student and alumni musicians will perform in the East Blugold Room of Davies Center. The 60-minute shows will feature music ranging from jazz standards to improvisation.

A performance by UW-Eau Claire music faculty will open the Summer Sounds series at 2 p.m. June 19 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The light classical concerts are presented in cooperation with the music and theatre arts department.

All events are free and open to the Chippewa Valley community. A complete events schedule is available at the Service Center, 715-836-3727, or online.

The eight-week series is funded by the students of UW-Eau Claire and coordinated by the Activities, Involvement and Leadership office.
