Continuing Education to offer sign language classes

Sign Language

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education will offer "Beginning Sign Language I" and "Beginning Sign Language III" this fall and "Beginning Sign Language II" next spring. BSL I will meet Monday evenings, Sept. 12-Nov. 21 (no class Oct. 31); BSL III will meet Thursday evenings, Sept. 15-Nov. 17; and BSL II will meet Monday evenings, Jan. 23-April 2, 2012 (no class March 19). All classes meet from 6:30-8 p.m. at UW-Eau Claire.

These noncredit classes are designed for parents, teachers, medical professionals and others interested in learning sign language for personal or professional reasons. BSL I requires no previous experience in sign language; BSL II is designed for those who previously have taken a beginning sign language class or who have learned basic sign language skills through other means; and BSL III is designed for those who have taken BSL I and II or for those who have basic signing skills but want more practice or a refresher course.

The following topics will be covered in the courses: the manual alphabet, fundamental conversation, elements of American Sign Language, facial expression and body language, receptive skills (watching and recognizing sign) and an introduction to deaf culture.

Instructor Rachel Kohn is an interpreter for the deaf in the Eau Claire Area School District and in the community. She has been an interpreter for 25 years and has taught sign language for more than 15 years.

The class fee is $129 per level and includes instruction and class handouts. Participants also must purchase a copy of the course textbook, "The Joy of Signing, Second Edition," by Lottie L. Riekehof.
