EAU CLAIRE — A small but growing proportion of the country's youth is being exposed online to interpersonal violence, aggression and harassment by means of cyberbullying.

A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire faculty member is co-editor of a new book that explores the critical issues surrounding this phenomenon and addresses ways to identify, prevent and respond to instances of cyberbullying.

"Cyberbullying Prevention and Response: Expert Perspectives," by Dr. Justin W. Patchin, UW-Eau Claire associate professor of criminal justice, and Dr. Sameer Hinduja, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at Florida Atlantic University, provides a comprehensive, up-to-date look at the major issues that teachers, school administrators, counselors, social workers and parents need to be aware of when dealing with cases of cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying occurs when an individual deliberately uses technology, especially computers or cell phones, to harass or threaten another person repeatedly over time, Patchin said. Examples include someone sending mean text messages or spreading rumors using cell phones or creating a hurtful Facebook page about someone else.

"We've been exploring cyberbullying for more than 10 years, and there is much we have learned about what it is and what can be done about it," Patchin said. "This book includes our perspectives along with insights from others who are most knowledgeable about cyberbullying and presents some of the most promising strategies known for dealing with the problem."

The book also is appropriate for a variety of college-level courses dealing with school violence and educational administration, Patchin said, adding that the chapter authors represent a carefully selected group of contributors who demonstrate topical expertise and the ability to write in clear, easily accessible language.

Patchin and Hinduja are co-directors of the Cyberbullying Research Center and also co-authored the book "Bullying Beyond the Schoolyard: Preventing and Responding to Cyberbullying," which was named 2009 Education Book of the Year by ForeWord Reviews.
