UW-Eau Claire footbridge repair update

Editor's update, July 21, 2011: The closing date for the ramp at the south end of the UW-Eau Claire footbridge has been changed to July 25 (from July 19 or 20 as initially reported below).

RELEASED: July 18, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — Beginning the afternoon of July 19 21 or early July 20 22 July 25, pedestrian traffic on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire footbridge over the Chippewa River will be confined to the upriver (east) side of the bridge as work proceeds on a structural repair project.

The ramp at the south end of the bridge will be closed until sometime the week of Aug. 1. During the ramp closure, pedestrian traffic must enter and exit the south end of the bridge via the steps opposite the ramp.

The ramp closure will prevent use of the bridge by anyone with mobility limitations. UW-Eau Claire's Parking and Transportation conveyance service is one option for students and university employees with temporary or permanent disabilities seeking alternate transportation across the river. More information about the conveyance service is available online.

Bicyclists are asked to continue walking their bicycles when crossing the bridge during the repair project. They will be required to carry their bicycles up and down the stairs at the bridge's south end during the ramp closure.

The project includes repairs to the bridge's deck surface and a support pier beneath the water line. The bridge's steel support system also is being painted in some areas.

The bridge repair project, which began in mid-May, is being overseen by the Wisconsin Division of State Facilities. Drax Inc., Madison, is the primary contractor for the project. The $206,000 state-funded project is expected to be completed by Aug. 28.
