Construction work starts at Garfield/Park intersection

RELEASED: July 13, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — City of Eau Claire crews began work today on a construction project at and near the intersection of Park and Garfield avenues at the east entrance to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus.

Following a closure for part of today, the intersection will remain open for the most part during the first phase of the project, with intermittent closures, said Randy Palmer of UW-Eau Claire Facilities Management. Those traveling to campus can expect traffic delays at the intersection for about a week, Palmer said.

The second phase of the project will then require a one-day closure of the intersection. That closure will occur July 21, weather permitting, and the intersection should reopen sometime July 22, said Doug Derks, deputy city engineer for the City of Eau Claire.

The first phase includes removing dirt boulevards and replacing them with colored, stamped concrete on Park Avenue between UW-Eau Claire's Hibbard Humanities Hall and Hibbard parking lot and on Garfield Avenue between Hibbard Hall and Brewer Hall. UW-Eau Claire will fund this portion of the project.

Also included in the first phase of the project is the replacement of a light fixture currently at the intersection and the installation of an additional light fixture, as well as the removal of some trees. Ash trees will be removed as part of the city's emerald ash borer management plan. Damaged and diseased maple trees also will be removed. Replacement trees will be planted by the city in October. The city will fund the lighting work and tree removal.

The second phase of the project, also funded by the city, will include reconstructing the intersection of Garfield and Park avenues.

During both phases of the project, those traveling to areas on lower campus located west of Park Avenue can use the Garfield Avenue campus hill. The campus hill is accessible via Clairemont Avenue and University Drive on upper campus.

Haas Sons Inc. is the contractor on the project.
