Tip Sheet for the week of Jan. 31, 2011

RELEASED: Jan. 31, 2011

Campus Experts
The latest Super Bowl advertising research completed by marketing professors Dr. Chuck Tomkovick and Dr. Rama Yelkur is attracting attention from media throughout the country. The professors, along with student researchers, have studied Super Bowl ads for more than a decade. Their latest findings indicate that using celebrities in Super Bowl ads is no longer among the top predictors of ad likeability. Instead, the use of children has moved into the list of top five ad likeability predictors. Other factors on the list include using animals and humor, limiting the amount of information shared about a product and product category. The professors also have expanded their research that found that aggregate stock prices of publicly traded firms that ran in-game Super Bowl ads outperformed the Standard & Poor's 500 by more than 1 percent during a two-week period. For details, contact Dr. Chuck Tomkovick at 715-836-2529 or tomkovcl@uwec.edu, or Dr. Rama Yelkur at 715-836-4674 or yelkurr@uwec.edu.

The success of UW-Eau Claire's physics majors has attracted the attention of the American Institute of Physics. The AIP has selected UW-Eau Claire's physics and astronomy department for a visit based on its record of graduating a large number of physics majors and having them find jobs quickly after graduation. UW-Eau Claire graduated an average of 13 physics majors per year during the past three years. Just 16 of the 507 bachelor's degree-granting departments at U.S. colleges and universities graduated more physics majors during that same time period. The department's communication with students about science careers, technology, engineering and mathematics, and the importance of STEM was noted by AIP. For details, contact Dr. J. Erik Hendrickson, professor and chair of the physics and astronomy department, at hendrije@uwec.edu or 715-836-5834.
