WAGE LogoRELEASED: Jan. 31, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — An article discussion concerning messages in women's magazines will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The event will take place in the TV lounge in the basement of Sutherland Hall on upper campus.

The discussion, titled "Sexism or Empowerment? Critically Exploring Cosmopolitan's Message," will analyze both the obvious and hidden messages in Cosmopolitan, as well as other magazines such as Shape, Seventeen and Glamour. Other topics to be addressed are the influence of magazines on adolescent and teenage girls and the types of content that men's magazines typically include.

The event is sponsored by UW-Eau Claire's Women's and Gender Equity Center. WAGE hosts an article discussion each month that addresses different issues related to women and women's experiences.

Articles for the discussion can be accessed through the WAGE website. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Abby Vercauteren, WAGE Center, at 715-836-2693 or vercaual@uwec.edu.
