Romantic comedy 'High Fidelity' to screen

High Fidelity PosterRELEASED: Jan. 27, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — "High Fidelity" (2000) will be presented Feb. 10-13 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. "A funny, perceptive movie about pop music, a man's confused passions for records and women, and the lure of perpetual teenagehood" (The Globe and Mail), the film will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

The biting romantic comedy stars John Cusack as Rob Gordon, the thirty-something owner of a Chicago record store where he sells music the old-fashioned way — on vinyl. When his longtime girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle) walks out on him, Rob must go on a soul-searching fact-finding mission, with the aid of his geek staff (Jack Black, Todd Louiso), in an effort to reclaim the girl of his dreams and reorganize his life. As he examines his failed attempts at romance and happiness, the process finds him being dragged, kicking and screaming, into adulthood.

"Cusack, with his ability to project glowering desperation and a sense of aggrieved entitlement, is perfect for this role," wrote Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan. "'High Fidelity' is a sharp and satisfying romantic comedy about the difficulty of commitment that utilizes Stephen Frears' incisive direction and some very knowing and sophisticated writing to give actor Cusack one of the best roles of his career."

Adapted from Nick Hornby's 1995 novel, the film features more than 50 aptly chosen songs and cameo appearances by Lili Taylor, Joelle Carter, Catherine Zeta-Jones Tim Robbins, Joan Cusack, Lisa Bonet, Sara Gilbert and Natasha Gregson Wagner.

Sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate, the 113-minute film is rated R for language and some sexuality.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. Community members who wish to attend campus films must purchase an annual IFS membership at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby. An individual membership costs $4; a family membership costs $10.
