Media Memo: Internal fraternity investigation outcome

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Julie Poquette

DATE: Jan. 25, 2011

SUBJECT: Internal fraternity investigation outcome

UW-Eau Claire Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Beth Hellwig sent the following e-mail message to the university community today:

UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff,

Dean of Students Brian Carlisle has completed UW-Eau Claire's internal investigation into allegations involving violations of university policies by the Epsilon Chi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta, located at 1404 State St. Though allegations of sexual assault at that location precipitated the investigation, its focus was limited to other potential policy violations, excluding sexual assault. Sexual assault investigations are ongoing through the Eau Claire Police Department, and the university continues to fully cooperate with police.

Based on the internal investigation, Dean Carlisle concluded the Epsilon Chi Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta was in violation of other university policies not related to sexual assault.

As a result, the university has imposed a number of disciplinary sanctions including, among others, the suspension of Epsilon Chi Chapter's official recognition as a student organization through May 22, 2011, a ban on the presence of alcohol at the house for one year, and a ban on the recruitment of new members until May 22, 2011. After the period of suspension, the chapter may reapply for recognition as a university organization and must provide written assurance that the actions which led to the suspension will not recur. If the chapter is successful at gaining recognized status, it will be placed on probation for a period of one year.

In accordance with university policy, the Epsilon Chi Chapter may appeal the findings and/or sanctions. Additionally, the university reserves the right to impose more sanctions depending on the outcome of the Eau Claire Police Department sexual assault investigation.

Dr. Beth Hellwig
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
