Student Senate approves 2011-12 Blugold Commitment funding allocations

RELEASED: Jan. 25, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Student Senate Monday passed a bill approving the allocation of just over $9.5 million in student differential tuition funds for the 2011-12 academic year through the university's Blugold Commitment initiative.

By a vote of 24-0 with two abstentions, the Student Senate approved differential tuition support of high-impact learning experiences for students; provost-led initiatives focused on improved course availability, enhanced student advising and course development for the university's liberal education curriculum; and financial assistance for students in need.

Of the $9,509,292 in differential tuition spending approved, $5,018,556 will support 62 projects that include domestic and international cultural immersion experiences, internships, innovative projects, enhanced teaching and learning, and expanded opportunities for student/faculty collaborative research and creative scholarly activities. The Senate also approved $1,658,416 to support the provost initiatives and $2,832,320 in student financial assistance.

The Blugold Commitment, approved in early 2010 by the UW System Board of Regents, is an initiative to allow the university to maintain and enhance the high-impact learning experiences students say they value. Blugold Commitment projects and programs are funded by differential tuition — a separate tuition above the tuition set annually by the Board of Regents — that will increase to a total of $1,200 per year, phased in over four years. To assure that UW-Eau Claire continues to maintain access for low- and middle-income families, up to 40 percent of the tuition increase is being used to provide grants for students with need.

Under the Blugold Commitment, students will pay an additional $300 in differential tuition during the 2010-11 academic year, $600 in 2011-12, $900 in 2012-13, and $1,200 in 2013-14 and each year thereafter. In addition to the $1,200 per year in Blugold Commitment differential tuition, UW-Eau Claire students continue to pay $163 per year in differential tuition under a plan originally instituted in 1998. All differential tuition funds support Blugold Commitment initiatives.

Even when the Blugold Commitment is fully implemented, UW-Eau Claire's tuition and fees still will be nearly equal to those at UW-La Crosse and UW-Stout and well below tuition at UW-Madison and the University of Minnesota.

The 2011-12 Blugold Commitment funding plan as approved by the Student Senate now goes before UW-Eau Claire Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich for approval.
