EAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student was recently awarded a scholarship through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program to study abroad.

Junior Aryn Senger, Marshall, was awarded $1,500 to study in Valladolid, Spain, during the 2011 spring semester. The opportunity is coordinated through UW-Eau Claire's Center for International Education and the Spanish Language & Culture Program for Foreign Students at the University of Valladolid.

"I'm excited to be here and especially excited to travel and get more involved once things get going," said Senger, who arrived in Valladolid Jan. 9. "It's interesting to see all the cultural differences and to speak the language with people who really speak it all the time."

When Senger returns she plans to host a presentation "to get other people as excited about study abroad opportunities as I am," she said. "I'll do a 'show-and-tell' about my experience in Spain and make sure that interested parties know about things like the Gilman Scholarship so that the cost of a trip doesn't get in the way of an awesome experience."

The Gilman International Scholarship Program, established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, provides awards that allow American undergraduate students who receive federal Pell Grant funding at two- or four-year colleges or universities to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas.
