Forensics team places third for overall sweepstakes in Illinois tourney

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire forensics team traveled to Peoria, Ill., Jan. 14-15 to attend the 12th annual Hell Froze Over tournament at Bradley University. UW-Eau Claire was one of 40 schools represented at the prestigious tournament and placed third in overall team sweepstakes for both days.

In the first tournament the UW-Eau Claire team advanced in 11 events to reach the semifinals, and in three of those events went on to final competition. At the next day's tournament, hosted by the University of Texas at Austin on the Bradley campus, UW-Eau Claire advanced in 13 events to the semifinals and in six events to the finals. In addition, junior Patrick Martin, Burnsville, Minn., placed 5th in individual sweepstakes.

Individual results for Jan. 14:

Making it to the semifinals for extemporaneous speaking were senior Meghan Pickard, Eau Claire; junior James Kust, Eau Claire; and Martin; for impromptu speaking were seniors Sarah Taylor, Merrill; and April Ross, Wauwatosa; junior Holly Albers, Mazeppa, Minn.; Martin and Kust; and for poetry interpretation, Albers.

In the final competition, Pickard placed third in informative speaking; senior Alicia Gerber, Ringle, placed second in after-dinner speaking, qualifying for the National Forensic Association tournament; and Martin placed sixth for persuasion.

Individual results for Jan. 15:

Making it to the semifinals were Pickard in extemporaneous speaking; Kust in communication analysis; Gerber in after-dinner speaking and dramatic interpretation; and Taylor for prose interpretation, persuasion and program oral interpretation.

In final competition, Pickard placed fourth in after-dinner speaking; Martin placed fourth in persuasion, second in informative speaking and fourth in impromptu speaking; Taylor placed fifth in impromptu speaking; and Gerber placed fifth in program oral interpretation.

The team will travel to the Iowa Swing tournament at the University of Northern Iowa and Wartburg College during the weekend of Jan. 22.
