Contemporary jazz dance performer to assist with DanceWorks auditions

RELEASED: Jan. 18, 2011

Karis Sloss
Karis Sloss, artistic director of the Twin Cities-based Eclectic Edge Ensemble, will visit campus Jan. 24-29.

EAU CLAIRE — The artistic director of the only jazz dance company in the Twin Cities area will serve as artist-in-residence in the department of music and theatre arts at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from Jan. 24-29.

Karis Sloss, of the Eclectic Edge Ensemble, will work with Dr. Toni Poll-Sorensen, professor of dance, in conducting auditions for a piece choreographed by Sloss for DanceWorks, the department's major performance for UW-Eau Claire's Concert Dance Company. Majors in nearly every department on campus gather together to present dances that showcase the traditions of ballet, tap, jazz, modern and ethnic dance with an emphasis on modern dance. Sloss will also teach jazz and modern dance classes while on campus.

Auditions will be held from 3-6 p.m. Jan. 24 in the McPhee Center's dance studio (Room 105). Selected dancers will participate in rehearsals with Sloss from Jan. 25-29. The DanceWorks performance is scheduled for March 31-April 2 at UW-Eau Claire's Kjer Theatre.

Sloss has studied dance for more than 20 years. For the past seven years, she and the Eclectic Edge Ensemble have produced performances at theaters and festivals in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
