Media Memo: Bid opening for new university student center construction

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Julie Poquette

DATE: Jan. 13, 2011

SUBJECT: Bid opening for new university student center construction

Kraemer Brothers LLC, Plain, is the apparent low bidder for construction of the new university student center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Bids for construction of the center were opened Jan. 11, and Kraemer Brothers submitted the apparent low bid of $35.28 million. The apparent low bid is $3.12 million less than the $38.4 million construction budget for the building.

Nine bids from six construction companies in Wisconsin and three in Minnesota were submitted; eight of the nine bids were below the construction budget. The bids are available for review on the Division of State Facilities website (select the "bid tab" link in the information dated Jan. 11 regarding the university student center project).

The Division of State Facilities, which is responsible for construction of the center, will now work with Kraemer Brothers to verify the apparent low bid and enter into a contract. Construction is expected to begin in late winter or early spring.

The $48.8 million new university student center project will replace the 51-year-old Davies Center, which will be deconstructed. The site of the existing Davies Center will be redeveloped as green space. The approximately 170,000-square-foot building will be funded through segregated fees, which are paid by students. No tax dollars will be involved in the development of the building.
