Nontraditional students invited to welcome event

RELEASED: Jan. 6, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host a welcome event and instruction course for adult students this semester.

The Adult Student Welcome will be held from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Jan. 21 in Room 1033 of McIntyre Library. The program is designed for nontraditional students who are new to the university, have been readmitted or have transferred from another university.

The event will introduce students to the services and opportunities available to nontraditional students. Participants will have the opportunity to meet currently enrolled nontraditional students and talk with the adult-student adviser. Information to be shared will include campus support services, how to use the library, technology support, dining options, parking, and textbook rental and purchase.

Also joining the presentation will be local author Joan Fleming. Fleming will speak about purpose, passion and perseverance and her experiences returning to UW-Eau Claire when she was 35. Now 76, she has written two books and has been a national speaker for three decades.

The event is free but registration is required. To register, call Nontraditional Student Services at 715-836-3259.

During the 2011 spring semester, UW-Eau Claire will offer a special course for adult students. The one-credit "Introduction to University Curriculum" course will help adult students make the most of their first year at the university.

The goal of the course is to help adult students learn to balance life, work, family and college; help with time management; increase academic self-confidence; improve study strategies; and much more.
