'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' to screen

RELEASED: Feb. 25, 2011

Film PosterEAU CLAIRE — "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2009) will be presented March 10-13 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. "A mind-bending and mesmerizing thriller that takes its time unlocking one mystery only to uncover another" (Los Angeles Times), the Swedish film will screen at 6 and 9 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

"The biggest compliment you can pay the much-anticipated film adaptation of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' is that you can't imagine Stieg Larsson's corker of a story ever having existed in book form," wrote the Miami Herald.

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a holiday gathering on the island owned and inhabited by her powerful Swedish family. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced she was murdered and that the killer is a member of his own family. He employs disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair links Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from decades past, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

"This dynamite thriller shivers with suspense," wrote Rolling Stone. "So if you ignore 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' because it's in Swedish with English subtitles, you probably deserve the remake Hollywood will surely screw up."

The International Film Society will present the 152-minute film, which is rated R for disturbing violent content including rape, grisly images, sexual material, nudity and language.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold card or IFS membership. Community members who wish to attend campus films must purchase an annual IFS membership at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby. An individual membership costs $4; a family membership costs $10.
