Best Buddies to host concert to benefit Special Olympics

RELEASED: Feb. 24, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire chapter of Best Buddies International will host a concert to support the Special Olympics campaign "Spread the Word to End the Word." The word, according to Special Olympics, is "retard" or "retarded."

According to organizers, the Best Buddies hope to raise awareness of the pain these words cause to millions of people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families and friends. The group invites faculty, staff, students and community members to share in the effort to replace such words with another: "respect."

The "Spread the Word to End the Word" concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. March 2 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center, will feature eight local musicians and groups: The Innocent Men, 5th Element, Audacious, Impromptu, Women's Concert Chorale, Concert Dance Company, Gospel Choir and Mike Blaisdell.

Tickets, available at the Service Center through the night of the event, are $3 for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff, and $5 for community members.

The chapter also will sell "Spread the Word" and "UWEC Best Buddies" T-shirts for $10. For more information, contact Nicole Weber at weberni@uwec.edu.
