Artists Series to present renowned ASL performer Trix Bruce

RELEASED: Feb. 21, 2011

Trix BruceEAU CLAIRE — Trix Bruce will present her one-person show, "The Hearing World Around Me," March 14 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Artists Series performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.

Bruce can tell the story of her life without uttering a word. She is a storyteller, a poet, an actress and a one-deaf-woman show. Using American Sign Language, she presents heartwarming tales about her life as a deaf person among the hearing. People with no idea of what deafness is like can come to know something about it while enjoying Bruce's true stories.

Born in Seattle, Wash., Bruce has been profoundly deaf since the age of six months. She is a popular teacher of ASL storytelling and interpretation, and has been a performing artist since she won the role of Helen Keller in her freshman year of high school. She has participated in the summer program hosted by the National Theatre of the Deaf and performed at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

During her visit Bruce also will present two ASL workshops March 15, which will be sponsored by UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension.

"Cookies for a Cause," an Artists Series initiative to spotlight nonprofit community organizations, continues. Cookies made especially for the program by Blugold Dining will be sold ($2, cash only) at the performance, with profits going to benefit the deaf and hard of hearing program of the Eau Claire Area School District. The program provides a quality education for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in safe and accessible environments, empowering them to become productive members of society using their preferred modes of communication.

Tickets for "The Hearing World Around Me" are $17 for the public, $15 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, or $7 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets for students are half-price, $3.50, until the day of the event. On the day of the event, students must pay the full student-ticket price.

Patrons also may charge their tickets to Discover, MasterCard or Visa when ordering by phone. Call 715-836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee is added to all telephone charge orders.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin. The Artists Series also is funded in part by Visit Eau Claire ... The Unexpected Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Radio, WHYS Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.
