EAU CLAIRE — An exhibition of paintings by eminent Asian-American artists will be featured Feb. 24-March 17 in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. An opening reception will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. Feb. 24.

The exhibit, "East Meets West," reflects the multicultural education of the featured artists, combining old-world influences with American experiences. The featured artists, Yi Kai, Lampo Leong, Amy Lee Segami, Ruijun Shen and Hongtu Zhang, were born and educated in China and continued their education in the U.S., with advanced studies in European-American art. Four of the artists studied traditional Chinese art. Segami was educated in engineering and began her art education in the U.S.

This multicultural dynamic gives the exhibit special significance, according to Tom Wagener, Foster Gallery director.

"UW-Eau Claire has developed strong ties with Chinese universities, participating in educational exchanges," Wagener said. "Seeing how the Chinese have adapted their culture with the U.S.'s modern culture is an integral part of this international study."

In addition to exhibiting, Zhang will lecture from 10-11 a.m. March 11 in the Foster Gallery.

Foster Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, 6-8 p.m. Thursdays and 1-4:30 p.m. weekends. Entry to the gallery is free and open to the public.
