Animated feature 'Batman: Mask of the Phantasm' to screen

RBatman PosterELEASED: Feb. 17, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" (1993) will be presented March 3-6 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Shown in conjunction with the March 8 appearance of "Batman" executive producer Michael Uslan for The Forum, the film will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

The animated feature introduces a new villain who appears and disappears at will, stalking and murdering the underworld kingpins of Gotham City. Can Batman (voiced by Kevin Conroy) elude the police, capture the Phantasm and clear his name? Discover all-new revelations about the Dark Knight's past, his arch-rival the Joker (Mark Hamill) and the most grueling battle of Batman's life — the choice between his love of a beautiful woman (Dana Delany) and his vow to be the defender of right.

"It has its own look, rich in Forties design," wrote the Austin Chronicle, which called the film "moody, haunting, full of bold shapes and action, striking compositions, and clever quotes from the encyclopedia of noir. It has style to spare. And for any kid at heart whose breath catches at the sight of a caped figure swooping across the sky, it has moments when your lungs will be stopped by a Dark Knight to dream on."

Sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate, the 76-minute film is rated PG.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. Community members who wish to attend campus films must purchase an annual IFS membership at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby. An individual membership costs $4; a family membership costs $10.

More information about the campus film series is available online and at the Activities and Programs office in Davies Center 133.
