Counseling Services to offer group sessions for spring semester

RELEASED: Feb. 16, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Counseling Services will offer the following groups for the spring 2011 semester.

Basics of Assertiveness Skills Training: Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m., Feb. 22-April 5. This interactive group will provide members with a safe and confidential opportunity to practice new assertiveness skills. Jodi Bright and Davin Maijala will facilitate.

Beyond the Body: A group for students searching for body acceptance: Wednesdays, 10-11 a.m., March 2-April 27. This supportive and confidential group will discuss techniques, ideas and strategies for working through negative views of one's body. Meghan Fisher and Mallory Nitsch will facilitate.

First Offenders Alcohol Education Groups: These groups are offered on an as needed basis by Counseling Services staff. This program meets the requirements of the Eau Claire court's "First Offender" program. Call or stop by the Counseling Services office for information about when groups are offered.

Grief After Loss Support Group: Date and time to be determined after review of schedules. This is a confidential and supportive group for those who are mourning the loss of a friend, loved one and/or family member. The focus is on educational information along with personal sharing and healing. Dr. Roberta Goodman will facilitate.

Harm Reduction Group: Fridays 3-4 p.m., beginning Feb. 25. This educational support group is for those who seek support for decreasing negative consequences caused by using alcohol or other substances of abuse. A desire for total abstinence is not required to be in this group. Members will be accepted all semester. Dave Sommer will facilitate.

LGBTQ Support Group: Date and time to be determined after review of schedules. This is a small group that provides a confidential and safe place to celebrate successes and work through challenges. It will explore relationships with oneself and others, and may incorporate educational material as it pertains to group discussions. Maijala will facilitate.

Lighter: Learn to Improve Good Through Experience & Relationships: Fridays, 1-2 p.m., March 4-April 29. This is an educational, cognitive and experiential group that will discuss techniques, ideas and strategies for working through and alleviating depression. Bright and Fisher will facilitate.

Neighbor Program: Dates and Time to be determined after review of schedules. This group will focus on improving and practicing skills of greeting and exchanging information in a highly supportive environment. Members will build on their presence and assertiveness in social and classroom settings and learn new techniques in healthy communication, while giving and receiving feedback in a positive manner. Justin Maki will facilitate.

Surviving to Thriving-Sexual Violence Recovery Group for Women: Wednesdays, 5-6 p.m., March 2-April 27. This group is open to female survivors of current and/or past sexual violence across the lifespan. It will provide members with a safe and confidential opportunity to gain support and build coping skills within a therapeutic environment. Mary Belknap and Fisher will facilitate.

Those interested should stop by the Counseling Services office in Old Library 2122 or call 715-836-5521 to sign up for a preregistration appointment for all groups.
