Musical events for the week of Feb. 20-26

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Feb. 20. All events are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Feb. 23:

Guest artist Dieter Hennings will perform on classical guitar at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Hennings' music ranges from new music on guitar to early music for lute, baroque guitar and theorbo. Hennings is an active proponent of new music, particularly Latin American music. He has performed and won awards in several countries, including Canada, Mexico, Italy, Spain and Slovenia. More information about Hennings and his free performance can be found online.

Thursday, Feb. 24:

Senior Christopher Boyd, Apple Valley, Minn., and freshman Leslie Stewart, Colchester, Vt., will perform a student trumpet recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with "Shadow Song" by Zach Ashcraft, performed by Boyd. Stewart will follow with "Sonata No. 8" by Arcangelo Corelli. Boyd and Stewart will continue to alternate performing the following pieces: "Napoli" by Herman Bellstedt, "Vocalise" by Sergei Rachmaninoff, "In-Trance-It" by Zach Ashcraft, "Ständchen" by Franz Schubert and "Quiet City" by Aaron Copland. The recital will conclude with "The Chase" by Mel Broiles, performed by both Boyd and Stewart. Boyd will be assisted by soprano Leisa Sunier, Kenosha, and Megan Blommer, Chatfield, Minn., on English horn.
