Winter Carnival 'Chill Out' set for Feb. 16-20

Winter Carnival 2011 graphicEAU CLAIRE — The schedule of activities for Winter Carnival 2011, "Chill Out," is set for Feb. 16-20 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Highlights include a comedy showcase, a singer-songwriter slam and a cappella concert, a midnight screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and a concert by Forever the Sickest Kids. The celebration also features a number of outdoor recreation activities. Events are free unless noted.

Wednesday, Feb. 16:

  • Chili Feed, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., veranda, Davies Center.
  • Forever the Sickest Kids, 7 p.m., Council Fire Room, Davies Center. UW-Eau Claire is the first stop on this pop-punk band's tour in support of its new self-titled full-length album. Tickets are $12 ($8 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and at the door.

Thursday, Feb. 17:

  • Dog-sledding events have been canceled. Dog-sledding workshop, noon-1 p.m., Environmental Adventure Center, Hilltop Center. Snow-Trek Sled Dog Adventures will explore the origins of human-canine partnership in the far north. The workshop will focus on
    present-day sled dog adventuring, outdoor adventuring skills, how clickers and motivators are used to train dogs, and how to choose the right canine partner.
  • Dog sledding, 1-3 p.m., Towers Field. See or experience dog sledding firsthand, weather permitting; ample snow is required.
  • Hot Beverage Bash, 1-3 p.m., Towers Field. Visit with Winter Carnival activities sponsors and warm up with a free hot chocolate or hot cider.
  • "A Serious Man" (2009), 6 and 8:30 p.m., Davies Theatre; screening through Sunday. Joel and Ethan Coen's dark comedy about the afflictions of a Jewish college professor in the 1960s Midwest "is not only hauntingly original, it's the final piece of the puzzle that is the Coens" (New York Magazine). Admission is free with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. Community members may buy IFS memberships at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in the east lobby of Davies Center.

Friday, Feb. 18:

  • A Cappella Extravaganza II, 7 p.m., Schofield Auditorium. This concert showcases the talents of UW-Eau Claire a cappella groups including Audacious, Fifth Element, Girls Night Out, Impromptu and The Innocent Men. Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door. Co-sponsored by the department of music and theatre arts.
  • Singer-Songwriter Slam, 8 p.m., The Cabin, Davies Center. Performers must arrive at or before 7:30 p.m. There is no advance sign up. All material must be original. Performers may play one song, no more, and the performance may not exceed five minutes. Performances will be judged by three people selected at random from the audience and two people chosen in advance by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate. The winner will receive a paid local-talent spot at The Cabin and a Winter Carnival T-shirt.
  • Winter Carnival Comedy Showcase, featuring Cristela Alonzo and Pete Lee, 9 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.
  • Winter Carnival Dance Party, 11 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.
  • "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," 11:59 p.m., Council Fire Room, Davies Center. Roger Ebert has called this audience-participation cult film "not so much a movie as more of a long-running social phenomenon." Tickets are $8 ($5 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door.

Saturday, Feb. 19:

  • Ice Fishing Tournament, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Braun's Bay, Half Moon Lake. A $50 cash prize will be awarded for the top fish, by weight, in each category. A valid Wisconsin fishing license is required. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 on the day of the tournament, available at the Environmental Adventure Center and at the event. More information is available from Dan Langlois.
  • Local Talent: The Ericksons, 8 p.m., The Cabin, Davies Center.
  • Winter Carnival Dance Party, 10 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center.

Sunday, Feb. 20:

  • "Just Dance" competition, 4-6 p.m., Higherground, Crest Wellness Center. Play the hit Wii game on Higherground's large-projection screen in this new Winter Carnival competition.

Winter Carnival activities are sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate, and University Recreation & Sport Facilities, part of the UW-Eau Claire Division of Student Affairs.
