RELEASED: Feb. 3, 2011
| Feb. 4, 2011 update: According to the Eau Claire Fire Department, welding activity was the cause of the Feb. 3 fire in Haas Fine Arts Center. The fire remains under investigation by the UW-Eau Claire Police Department. |
EAU CLAIRE — Fire forced the evacuation of Haas Fine Arts Center on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus Thursday afternoon, Feb. 3.
The Eau Claire Fire Department responded to the fire which was contained in the space below the stage of Gantner Concert Hall. The fire caused only minor damage but smoke from the fire spread through much of the building. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The building was ventilated and the fire department determined it is again safe to occupy. However, the smell of smoke may still be present in the building. Gantner Concert Hall is closed as maintenance staff works to clean-up.
Students with classes, rehearsals or lessons scheduled in Haas Fine Arts Center Thursday evening should check with their faculty to determine if they are being held.
With the possible exception of Gantner Concert Hall, all Friday classes, rehearsals and lessons will take place as scheduled.
