Award-winning documentary about U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan to screen

Restrepo PosterRELEASED: Feb. 10, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — "Restrepo" (2010), a nominee for this year's Academy Award for Best Documentary, will be presented Feb. 24-27 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, the film will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

"'Restrepo' is an example of photojournalism at its finest," wrote the Austin Chronicle.

The feature-length documentary chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, named "Restrepo" after a platoon medic who's killed in action. It was considered one of the most dangerous postings in the United States military.

"Restrepo" is an entirely experiential film. The cameras never leave the valley, and there are no interviews with the generals or diplomats. The film's only goal is to make viewers feel as if they have just been through a 90-minute deployment. Directors Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger were nominated for a Directors Guild of America award.

"As the war in Afghanistan returns to the front pages and the national debate, we owe the men in 'Restrepo,' at the very least, 90 minutes or so of our attention," wrote The New York Times. "If nothing else, this film, in showing how much they care about one another, demands the same of us."

The International Film Society will present the 93-minute film, which is rated R.

Winners of the Academy Awards will be announced Feb. 27.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or IFS membership. Community members who wish to attend campus films must purchase an annual IFS membership at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby. An individual membership costs $4; a family membership costs $10.
