Event to help prospective college students, families apply for financial aid

RELEASED: Feb. 10, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — Financial Aid professionals from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will be among those helping area high school seniors and their parents apply for financial aid during the sixth annual College Goal Sunday Feb. 20.

Activities will begin at 2 p.m. at the Chippewa Valley Technical College, 620 W. Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire. Participants are instructed to use the entrance by parking lot P6 or P7 (near the front).

Financial aid experts from UW-Eau Claire; CVTC; UW-Stout; UW-River Falls; the Ho-Chunk Nation, Great Lakes; the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction/WEOP; and area lending institutions will provide step-by-step help in completing and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. A $250 scholarship drawing also will be held.

College Goal Sunday "Weekend Edition" is sponsored by the Wisconsin Association for Student Financial Aid Administrators and will be held at 30 locations statewide. It is designed to address the needs of low-income and first-generation college families who are completing the FAFSA, the first step for students to overcome financial burdens and pursue their goals of higher education. The message from organizers is that there is money available for college, so prospective students should not be discouraged.

Dependent students, those born after Jan. 1, 1988, should bring a parent along with completed federal income tax returns for 2010 (if filing) and W2 statements. If a parent isn't available, students should still attend. Last year, 2,725 college-bound students and their families received help on College Goal Sunday statewide.

More information is available online or by calling 866-578-4625.
