Student veteran issues to be focus of Feb. 18 conference

RELEASED: Feb. 9, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host a Veteran Student Conference from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 18 in the university's Davies Center.

The event is open to students, staff and faculty members from UW System and Wisconsin Technical College System campuses who are interested in learning more about student military veteran issues or sharing veteran student issues and concerns. The conference, which is free to attendees, is funded in part by a grant UW-Eau Claire received last spring through the UW-Extension's Adult Friendly Institution Incentive Plan awards program. (See a UW-Eau Claire news release for background information about the grant.)

"This conference provides a forum in which student veterans from across our state and those who serve them in the higher education setting can gather to share ideas and discuss issues affecting these students," said Bonnie Isaacson, nontraditional student adviser at UW-Eau Claire and one of the conference organizers.

David Backstrom, a Vietnam War veteran and retired chief of University Police at UW-Eau Claire, will be the conference keynote speaker. He will speak about his work as an organizer and participant in the statewide Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, as well as his return to Vietnam as a civilian more than 40 years after serving there as a member of the U.S. military.

The conference also will include sessions focused on military education benefits, the value of military experience in career planning, navigating the VA medical system and other topics. View the complete conference schedule. Representatives from campus and community organizations that provide veterans' resources will exhibit during the conference.

Registration is required for the Student Veteran Conference. Faculty and staff from UW System and Wisconsin Technical College System campuses wishing to attend should complete the registration form and return it by Feb. 14 to Amy Hobbs, UW-Eau Claire Student Affairs, at hobbsaj@uwec.edu or 715-836-5911 (fax).
