EAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student was recently recognized with an Outstanding Member of the Month Award from Circle K International.

Melissa Rowe, a senior from Eau Claire, received the award for January 2011. She is a biology major and pre-professional health science minor. As president of the UW-Eau Claire Circle K club, she planned a Habitat for Humanity trip to Miami, Fla., as an alternative winter break. Almost 50 students participated in the trip.

Jarrod Echols, the subregion C international representative of Circle K International, took notice of Rowe's efforts. According to Echols, this is the first Outstanding Member of the Month Award to come from his subregion in the past three years.

"I awarded this to Melissa because the story of what she had planned and how many hours she had dedicated toward the event stood out among the rest of outstanding members within my subregion," Echols said.

According to the UW-Eau Claire Circle K club adviser, Donna Raleigh, this award has not been given to a UW-Eau Claire student in the 10 years she has been with the group.

"Missy models leadership skills that are lessons for Circle K students and advisers alike. She dreams big." Raleigh said.

"We wanted to up our Circle K membership to 30 paid members; Missy set the goal at 114. We wanted to set the community service hour goal at 650 hours; Missy set it at 1,000 hours. Circle K now has more than 160 paid members and has already completed more than 2,000 hours of community service."

Circle K focuses on community service and each club is sponsored by a Kiwanis club. Circle K International has more than 11,000 student members in 17 nations.
