Media Memo: UW-Eau Claire student support of Eau Claire Transit bus service

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Julie Poquette

DATE: Feb. 4, 2011

SUBJECT: UW-Eau Claire student support of Eau Claire Transit bus service

A Feb. 2 UW-Eau Claire news release reported an increase of more than 19 percent in Eau Claire Transit bus ridership by UW-Eau Claire students and employees over the past five years. That news release also indicated that a portion of UW-Eau Claire student segregated fees supports the bus service.

The following facts further clarify the support by UW-Eau Claire students for Eau Claire Transit service:

  • The amount per student paid to support the bus service for the 2010-11 academic year is $23.25.
  • State and federal funding cover 58.5 percent of Eau Claire Transit's total costs of operation, according to Mike Branco, transit manager for the city of Eau Claire. For 2010-11, the total local share of the costs to run Eau Claire Transit's Route 9 service (the primary route serving the UW-Eau Claire campus) is $225,000. UW-Eau Claire student segregated fees pay for the entire local share.
  • The 316,404 UW-Eau Claire student and employee bus rides during 2010 constituted 32.5 percent of Eau Claire Transit's total annual ridership of 971,687.
