Alumni Association to honor seven accomplished graduates Dec. 17

EAU CLAIRE — Seven accomplished alumni will return to campus to receive awards from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Alumni Association Dec. 17 at a luncheon and ceremony in conjunction with fall commencement.

"We will celebrate the talent, creativity and leadership of these individuals who represent and honor this university so well," John Bachmeier, director of Alumni Relations, said of the awards. "The university is proud to recognize these exceptional graduates for their professional success and for their service to others."

December 2011 award alumni award winners are:

  • Baier

    Beth Baier

    Beth Baier, who graduated in 1979 with degrees in journalism and Spanish, will receive the Lifetime Excellence Award, which is presented to alumni who have demonstrated longtime and successful commitment to their careers and communities. Recipients have made positive and dramatic impacts through dedication to service, and have lived their lives as a testimony to UW-Eau Claire's motto, "Excellence." Baier serves as senior vice president of business affairs and general counsel for Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

  • Deich
    Faye Deich
    Faye Deich, who graduated in 1979 with a nursing degree, will receive the Lifetime Excellence Award, which is presented to alumni who have demonstrated longtime and successful commitment to their careers and communities. Recipients have made positive and dramatic impacts through dedication to service, and have lived their lives as a testimony to UW-Eau Claire's motto, "Excellence." Deich serves as the senior vice president of divisions operations and chief operating officer at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
  • Bertzyk
    Scott Bertzyk
    Scott Bertzyk, who graduated in 1981 with degrees in accounting and business administration, will receive the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the community, state or nation that brings credit upon the recipient and the university. An attorney with the Greenberg Traurig law firm in Santa Monica, Calif., since 2006, Bertzyk's legal work focuses on commercial civil litigation.


  • Friedberg
    Dr. Lillian Friedberg
    Dr. Lillian Friedberg, who graduated in 1985 with degrees in German and English, also will receive the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes distinguished service to the community, state or nation that brings credit upon the recipient and the university. Friedberg is the founding director of Hooked on Drums, a nonprofit organization that serves urban youth with programs focused on West African cultural traditions.



  • Hein
    Dr. David Hein
    Dr. David Hein, a 1977 chemistry graduate, will receive the President's Award, which recognizes outstanding professional and personal achievements and service to UW-Eau Claire. Hein is a professor of pharmacology at the University of Louisville, chair of the department of pharmacology and an associate provost at the university.





  • Herbert

    Todd Herbert

    Todd Herbert, a 1980 education graduate, also will receive the President's Award, which recognizes outstanding professional and personal achievements and service to UW-Eau Claire. Herbert recently left his position of director of the Learning Paths division of Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee to spend more time working with community and school groups.




  • Kravik
    Katrina Kravik
    Katina E. Kravik, a 1997 English graduate, will receive the Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award, which acknowledges special achievements and great promise of alumni who are within 15 years of their graduation. Kravik is chief executive officer of Northwire Technical Cable, an Osceola-based business that has been in her family for decades.
