UW-Eau Claire nursing faculty honored for work in nursing education

EAU CLAIRE — Five faculty members from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire recently received awards for their work in the field of nursing education.

Sperstad Peck
Dr. Rita Sperstad Dr. Sue Peck

Dr. Rita Sperstad, assistant professor of nursing, and Dr. Sue Peck, professor of nursing, received the Ihle Family Award for Caring. Established by the Ihle family, the award recognizes those who perform nursing responsibilities in an unusually sensitive, caring way and perform teaching or administrative responsibilities in a manner that models caring attributes. The award also recognizes individuals who engage in activities that reflect a commitment to a caring colleagueship with peers, health care providers and/or clients.

Melissa Boellaard Dr. Rachel Merkel

Melissa Boellaard, clinical instructor of nursing, received the Patricia M. Ostmoe Award for Faculty and Academic Staff Excellence in Clinical Instruction. Ostmoe, dean of the School of Nursing (now College of Nursing) from 1982-95, retired in 1997. She established this award to recognize faculty and staff for their excellence in clinical instruction.

Dr. Charlotte Sortedahl


Dr. Rachel Merkel, assistant professor of nursing, was awarded the Suzanne Van Ort Award for Faculty Creativity and Scholarliness. The award is given to nursing faculty who demonstrate creativity and scholarliness through completion of nursing research projects, scholarly papers or the development of innovative teaching strategies. Van Ort was the dean of UW-Eau Claire's School of Nursing from 1977-82.

Dr. Charlotte Sortedahl, assistant professor of nursing, received the Rita Kisting Sparks Faculty Service Award. The award recognizes Sortedahl's exemplary service and leadership on behalf of the profession of nursing through her faculty development seminars. Kisting Sparks retired from UW-Eau Claire in 2002 after serving as a faculty member, department chair, assistant dean and interim associate dean. She established the award to recognize faculty achievement for excellence in service.
