Continuing Education to offer foot and nail care program

RELEASED: Aug. 26, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education now is accepting registrations for "Foot and Nail Care: Education for Nurses," a program designed for nurse practitioners, wound care nurses, diabetic educators and registered nurses working in public health, elderly services, long-term care and diabetic education.

The program will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Best Western Trail Lodge & Suites and from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 21 at First Lutheran Church, both in Eau Claire. Dr. Tara Beuscher, an adult nurse practitioner at the Marshfield Clinic-Minocqua Center will be the program instructor.

Beuscher, who is certified as a clinical nurse specialist in gerontology, has a wealth of teaching and clinical experience in foot and nail care. She has taught about foot and nail care since 1991 and has led the Foot and Nail Care: Education for Nurses course in Eau Claire for more than 15 years.

The following topics will be covered during the program: anatomy, physiology and physical assessment of the lower leg and foot; patient teaching; care of toenails and hyperkeratotic lesions; protection of the feet; and appropriate nursing interventions. A supervised clinical practicum will be offered during the second day.

The course provides the tools needed to begin a practice of intermediate foot and nail care. It also qualifies participants to take the certification exam for foot and nail care offered through the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board.

Tuition is $499 per person for the two-day session and includes lunch each day, refreshments, a program manual, instruction and supervised practice.

Enrollment is limited and past programs have filled quickly, so early registration is recommended.

To register, obtain more information or request reasonable accommodations for disabilities, call 715-836-3636 or 866-893-2423, use the Wisconsin Relay System (711), visit the Continuing Education website or email ce@uwec.edu.
