Two geriatric health workshops offered by UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education

EAU CLAIRE — UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education/Extension is now accepting registrations for two workshops designed for social workers, health care workers, health and human service professionals, and others working with the elderly.

Dangers and Benefits of Medications in the Elderly” will be held Oct. 13 from 1-4:30 p.m. at Best Western Trail Lodge in Eau Claire. Doug Streifel, dually licensed as a nurse and pharmacist in Wisconsin, will be the presenter. Topics will include:

  • Drugs used to treat pain, mental health, constipation and blood pressure.
  • Identification of the classes of drugs to avoid in the elderly.
  • Pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic alternatives that might reduce risks in the elderly.

Depression, Anxiety and Cognitive Disorders:  Assessment and Treatment in the Elderly” will be held Nov. 3 from 1-4:30 p.m. at the Best Western Trail Lodge in Eau Claire. Todd Sigler, a licensed psychologist, nationally certified counselor and registrant of the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, will be the presenter. Topics will include:

  • Diagnostic criteria for mood, anxiety and cognitive disorders in the elderly.
  • Diagnostic methods and psychological testing instruments used by psychologists.
  • Therapeutic interventions and empirically validated treatments most appropriate for the elderly.

The course fee for each program is $69 and includes workshop materials and
refreshments. Participants will earn 3.25 hours of continuing education credits.

These educational offerings have been approved by the National Continuing Education Review Service of the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards.
