EAU CLAIRE — Val Kilmer makes his film debut in "Top Secret!" (1984), a comedy from the creators of "Airplane!" that will screen May 12-15 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate will present the film at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.
Kilmer plays Nick Rivers, a Elvis Presley-like American rock idol sent behind the Iron Curtain on a goodwill tour. Before long he is involved in a complex espionage scheme, thanks to the beautiful daughter of a scientist held captive by the Communists.
"The rock 'n' roll spy spoof may be the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker team's most consistent work," wrote the A.V. Club. "'Top Secret!' replaces the scattershot-parody approach with a more precise re-creation of the dopey simplicity of WWII romances and Elvis pictures. Most of all [the film] demonstrates a playfulness which Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker have indulged before and since, but never with such Jacques Tati-like whimsy."
The 90-minute film is rated PG.
Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or International Film Society membership. Community members who wish to attend campus films must purchase an annual IFS membership at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby.
