Symphonic Choir to perform May 8

RELEASED: April 28, 2011

EAU CLAIRE The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Dr. Alan Rieck, associate professor of music, will present its spring concert at 1 p.m. May 8 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The Symphonic Choir, along with the University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Nobuyoshi Yasuda, associate professor of music, will present Franz Joseph Haydn's "The Creation."

The cast includes soprano Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour, associate professor of music, as Gabriel; tenor Dr. Mark Mowry, lecturer of music, as Uriel; baritone Dr. Robert Knight, interim dean of undergraduate studies, as Raphael; bass Anthony Reed, Alexandria, Minn., as Adam; soprano Meagan Seubert, Eau Claire, as Eve; and the Symphonic Choir as the chorus, accompanied by junior music major Elliott Etzkorn, Savage, Minn.

Seubert said she is looking forward to working alongside the music faculty.

"I worked with them in the production of the opera 'The Magic Flute,' but they acted as mentors and coached me in my performance," Seubert said. "I am excited to work in a professional setting with them as my musical peers and am eager to see how they as performers process this 'creation.'"

Seubert said the audience will see some of the "very best" Eau Claire has to offer. "I am hoping that they will appreciate the talent we have here."

The Symphonic Choir specializes in the study and performance of music composed for chorus and orchestra. The group is made up of students from many scholastic disciplines within the university as well as singers from throughout the Chippewa Valley. Two major concerts are presented each year with the University Symphony Orchestra.

The University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Nobuyoshi Yasuda, associate professor of music, is a 60-member student ensemble that performs symphonic repertoire of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Tickets, available online and at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $6 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, 17 and younger, and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
