Musical events for the week of May 1

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning May 1. All events are free and open to the public.
Sunday, May 1:

  • Senior Kim Walde, Eleva, will present her senior capstone dance recital at 2 p.m. in Kjer Theatre.

  • A guest artist recital featuring world-class pianist Eugene Alcalay will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Alcalay, a native of Bucharest, Romania, will perform selections by Franz Liszt, Ludwig van Beethoven, Henri Dutilleux and Modest Mussorgsky.

Monday, May 2:

  • A joint student soprano recital featuring seniors Ruth Hurd, Fall Creek, and Stephanie Dietz, La Crosse, will begin at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Hurd and Dietz will open and close the concert together, and alternate performances between them throughout.

  • A guest artist recital featuring violinist Dr. Scott Conklin and pianist Dr. Alan Huckleberry will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Conklin is an advocate of new music for violin. His contemporary album of American compositions recorded with Huckleberry was released to critical acclaim, and the two recently returned from a concert tour of Germany. Conklin and Huckleberry are faculty members at the University of Iowa School of Music.

Tuesday, May 3:

  • A joint student recital featuring the Oboe Studio of Dr. Christa Garvey, associate professor of music, will begin at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The concert will feature pieces by Vincenzo Bellini, Camille Saint-Saëns and W.A. Mozart, as well as other composers.

  • A concert by Jazz Ensemble IV, directed by Robert Baca, professor of music, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The concert will feature student conductors Brian Handeland, a UW-Eau Claire graduate from Minneapolis, Minn., and Will Horn, a junior from Eagan, Minn.

  • A joint student West African drumming recital, directed by Eugene Kulbeck, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The concert will feature a variety of traditional African rhythms from Nigeria, Mali, Guinea and other regions of the country.

Wednesday, May 4:

  • A student recital featuring senior flutist Sarah Bruening, New Berlin, will begin at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Aaron Copland will be featured.

  • A joint student recital by wind chamber ensembles, directed by Dr. Peter Haberman, will begin at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. A number of students will perform in the recital, which will feature W.A. Mozart's "Serenade in C Minor," Igor Stravinsky's "Octet for Wind Instruments" and Charles Gounod's "Petite Symphony, Op. 90."

  • A faculty recital, featuring "Suite for Cello and Jazz Piano Trio" by Claude Bolling, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Performers will be Dr. Tulio Rondón, assistant professor of music, on cello; senior Andy Detra, Sun Prairie, on double bass; UW-Eau Claire graduate Brandon Covelli, Racine, on piano; and senior David Power, Eau Claire, on percussion.

Thursday, May 5:

  • This event has been cancelled. Senior cellist Nathan Brunette, Verona, will present a student recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. His recital will consist of three pieces: Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 1, Franz Joseph Haydn's Cello Concerto in C and Sergei Prokofiev's Sonata for Cello and Piano in C Major, Op. 119.
