Academy Award-winning foreign language film to screen

RELEASED: April 22, 2011

Secret in their Eyes
The International Film Society will present "The Secret in Their Eyes" May 5-8.

EAU CLAIRE — "The Secret in Their Eyes" (Argentina-Spain 2009), winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, will be presented May 5-8 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. A blend of love story, police procedural, crime thriller and legal drama, the film will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Ricardo Darin stars as Benjamin Esposito, a recently retired criminal court investigator who decides to write a novel based on a 25-year-old unresolved murder case that still haunts him. He shares his plans with Irene (Soledad Villamil), the judge and a former colleague with whom he has been secretly in love for years. Benjamin's initial involvement with the case is shown through flashbacks, as he sets out to identify the murderer. But his search for the truth will put him at the center of a judicial nightmare, as the mystery of the heinous crime continues to unfold in the present.

"Juan Jose Campanella is the writer-director, and here is a man who creates a complete, engrossing, lovingly crafted film," wrote film critic Roger Ebert. "'The Secret in Their Eyes' is a rebuke to formula screenplays. We grow to know the characters, and the story pays due respect to their complexities and needs. This is a real movie, the kind they literally don't make very much anymore."

The International Film Society will present the 129-minute film, which is subtitled in English and rated R for a rape scene, violent images, some graphic nudity and language.

Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or IFS membership. Community members who wish to attend campus films must purchase an annual IFS membership at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby. An individual membership costs $4; a family membership costs $10.

More information about the campus film series is available online and at the Activities and Programs office in Davies Center 133.
