COEHS Diversity Expo set for May 12

RELEASED: April 22, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — Education and social work students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will share the results of their diversity research projects during the bi-annual COEHS Human Diversity Expo May 12.

The Expo, which will run from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center, will feature projects designed by 140 students enrolled in "Social Foundations: Human Relations" and "Ethnic-Sensitive Social Work Practice." The courses are taught by Drs. Incho Lee, Christin DePouw, Aram deKoven and Jill Pinkney Pastrana in the education studies department and Dr. Leah Olson-Mc Bride in the social work department.

Students' group research projects are based on service-learning experiences and focus on a wide variety of issues. The following are examples of project topics:

  • White teacher racial identity and its impact on expectations for students of color.
  • Transformative process of volunteers and communities in awareness projects.
  • Roles of family and community in the development of people with special needs.
