Annual Mathematics Retreat hosted on campus April 27

RELEASED: April 20, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire mathematics department will host the 20th annual Mathematics Retreat April 27. Local high school students, parents and teachers are encouraged to attend.

The retreat will consist of a variety of mathematics presentations by UW-Eau Claire students and faculty. This year two new events will be featured: a math contest and talent show.

According to Dr. Simei Tong, associate professor of mathematics, the math contest will be a competition by student teams, and the talent show, "Mathematician Has Talent," will be a show of anything except math, including a music performance.

This year's guest speaker will be Dr. Steven Krantz, professor of mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Krantz, who earned his doctorate in mathematics from Princeton University, has published numerous books and edits multiple research journals.

Krantz's presentation, "A Matter of Gravity," will feature new developments in the theory of the centroid of a body in space. According to Tong, this will be familiar to anyone who has experience with multivariable calculus.

"The subject is pleasing because it is quite mathematical but also lends itself well to physical intuition," Tong said.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, call the UW-Eau Claire mathematics department at 715-836-3301 or email Dr. Bob Andersen, associate professor of mathematics, at andersrn@uwec.edu.
