EAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire graduate and a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve recently was named military education benefits coordinator at UW-Eau Claire.

Miranda Cross-Schindler, who served in legal administrative support in C Company, 187th Battalion, in San Antonio, Texas, in 1999-01, was appointed to the new position in January.

Based in the UW-Eau Claire Registrar's Office, the position was created to meet the increasing demands of processing federal and Wisconsin benefits programs for the growing number of veteran students at the university, said Registrar James Barrett.

"It became necessary to hire a person whose sole task was to work with veterans," Barrett said. "The coordinator manages all federal veterans benefits, the Wisconsin GI Bill and the GoArmyEd program, which provides educational benefits for active-duty soldiers around the world."

Cross-Schindler also provides benefits counseling to UW-Eau Claire's approximately 300 veteran students, advocates for the needs of the university's Veterans Center, advises the student Veterans Club and promotes veterans benefits in the community.

"I enjoy face-to-face time speaking with students to help them make decisions regarding their benefits," Cross-Schindler said. "I also enjoy learning about services other campus departments provide and discovering ways to work together more efficiently. Having graduated from UW-Eau Claire using my military education benefits, I can identify with what these students are going through."

Cross-Schindler received a bachelor's degree in management from UW-Eau Claire in 2007 and a master of business administration degree in 2008. Prior to joining the UW-Eau Claire staff, she held veterans-related positions with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and GS Alliance in Eau Claire. She also attended the National Veterans Training Institute at the University of Colorado Denver.
