Musical events for the week of April 24

RELEASED: April 18, 2011

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning April 24. All events are free and open to the public.

Tuesday, April 26:

  • A joint student recital by the Wind Chamber Ensemble will begin at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Nine students will perform in the concert, which will begin with the Flute Trio, featuring Tyler Adam, Chanhassen, Minn.; Madeline Fitzpatrick, Excelsior, Minn.; and Ashley Zipperer, Green Bay. The Double Reed Trio, featuring Katelyn Johnston, Eau Claire; Megan Blommer, Chatfield, Minn.; and David Tetzlaff, Oak Creek will perform next. The concert will conclude with Reeds Anonymous, featuring Kayla Carlson, North Prairie; Katie Miller, Elmwood; and Alex Widstrand, Eau Claire.

Wednesday, April 27:

  • A joint student recital, featuring senior mezzo-soprano Lauren Schell, Stoughton, and junior bass Anthony Reed, Alexandria, Minn., will begin at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

  • UW-Eau Claire's BASSically Brass Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble along with the University Trombone Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The recital will feature soloists Jason Marshall, Oconomowoc, and Nicole Brellenthin, Burnsville, Minn., and guest performer Nathan Rakow, Sparta, on euphonium. BASSically Brass is directed by Dr. Jerry Young, professor of music. It is an extension of the tuba-euphonium studio and provides students an opportunity to perform original and transcribed pieces for their instruments. The University Trombone Ensemble is directed by Dr. Phillip Ostrander, associate professor of music. The ensemble consists of students from a variety of departments and tours annually.

Thursday, April 28:

  • A joint student recital by the Piano Studio of Dr. Namji Kim will begin at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

  • A joint student recital by the Clarinet Studio of Dr. Richard Fletcher will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The following students will be featured: Katie Miller, Elmwood; Yeng Chang, Grant, Minn.; James McAdams, Madison; Kelli Gasparka, Kewaunee; Ashley Zipperer, Green Bay; Rachel Gochenour, Farmington, Minn.; Sara Baye, Green Bay; Kathryn Beck, Blaine, Minn.; Tyler Anderson, Eagan, Minn.; Emily Wuest, Oshkosh; Meredith Simon Armstrong, Scandia, Minn.; and April Heder, Wauwatosa.

  • Senior soprano Tara Metcalf, Eau Claire, will present a student recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Saturday, April 30:

  • Senior Caitlyn Rathburn, White Bear Lake, Minn., will present a senior capstone dance recital at 2 p.m. in Kjer Theatre. The show, "When Words Fail," will feature seven pieces, each choreographed by Rathburn. "Serendipity" was co-choreographed by Allison Frosch, Prairie du Sac, and Shane Capaul, Mayer, Minn., and "In Title Only" was co-choreographed by Capaul. Rathburn will combine dance with the spoken word on an original piece called "She Moves."
