EAU CLAIRE — A new study-abroad program to India will be offered to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students during Winterim 2012.

"The study abroad program to India will give students firsthand knowledge of the key role that India plays as an economic leader and export target for the U.S. as well as for Wisconsin," said Dr. Rama Yelkur, UW-Eau Claire professor of marketing and coordinator of the university's international business programs. "It will build perspective of the international marketplace, for both businesses and educational institutions."

Wisconsin's exports to India have grown by nearly 30 percent in the last year, and India now stands as Asia's fourth largest economy with an annual growth rate of over 8 percent, Yelkur said.

"For students in business and other disciplines, learning about India's role in the world economy will provide a body of knowledge that will enhance the UW-Eau Claire degree," Yelkur said.

Students will travel to Shri Ram College of Commerce in New Delhi from Jan. 2-17. They will attend lectures by professors from SRCC and Delhi University on topics related to business, economy, politics, society and the culture of India. They also will tour cultural and historic sites in New Delhi and the neighboring cities of Agra, the site of the Taj Mahal, and Jaipur, known for its palace, stone observatory, forts and monuments.

May 1 is the priority application deadline for students interested in the program. Students in all academic disciplines who have a cumulative resident GPA of 2.3 or higher, good academic standing and at least sophomore standing are eligible to apply. Qualified students should print and complete the application form, then submit it and other application materials by May 1. The application form is accessible through the program website.

Scholarships for the program are available through the U.S. Department of Education. Twelve scholarships of $400 each will be offered, with preference given to students currently admitted to the UW-Eau Claire College of Business. Additional $1,000 scholarships are available for anyone studying abroad in the spring 2012 semester (the application deadline for these scholarships is Oct. 15, 2011).

The UW-Eau Claire Winterim program to India was developed through a $190,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to prepare students and Wisconsin businesses to be more competitive in emerging markets. (See related news release.) Through the grant, "Global Opportunities for Business and Education (GLOBE) with a focus on China and India (CHINDIA)," UW-Eau Claire also has offered short-term study abroad programs to China during the January term. The grant also supports the development of a new international business major and provides programming to assist small and medium-sized companies in conducting business with China and India.

For more information about the GLOBE CHINDIA program, contact Dr. Rama Yelkur, UW-Eau Claire Center for International Business Programs, at yelkurr@uwec.edu or 715-836-4674.
