Earth Day events planned for the week of April 18

Editor’s note: This news release replaces one published April 12 and contains a more extensive list of Earth Day activities happening April 17-21 at UW-Eau Claire.

Earth Week posterEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will present multiple events in observance of Earth Day. April 22 marks the 41st anniversary of Earth Day, which was conceived in 1970 by former Wisconsin governor and U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson.

More than a billion people are expected to participate in the international celebration of Earth Day. UW-Eau Claire activities will include:

Sunday, April 17

  • The film "Gasland," a 2010 Oscar nominee for Best Documentary, will screen at 6 p.m. in Schneider 100.

Monday, April 18

  • "Home," a film by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, will show at 6 p.m. in Hibbard 102.

  • Ken Meter from Sustainable Food Systems will hold a lunch forum from noon-1 p.m. in The Cabin of Davies Center. The event is sponsored by the Foodlums, a UW-Eau Claire student organization. Meter is an experienced food systems analyst and president of Crossroads Resource Center, an organization that works with communities to develop stronger, local, democratic food systems.

Tuesday, April 19

  • "Green Fire," the first high-definition documentary about legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold, will screen at 7 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium. Admission is $8 for faculty/staff and community members, and $5 for UW-Eau Claire students with a student ID. See related news release.

  • A free concert celebration sponsored by the Student Senate Environmental Endeavors Commission will take place from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. behind Putnam Hall. The concert will feature Irie Sol, Anastasia Davis and Roster McCabe. For more information, visit the event's Facebook page. The Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group's Energy Service Corps will have an energy use education table at the concert.

Wednesday, April 20

  • Woods and Water River Cleanup: Participants should meet at 3 p.m. in the Environmental Adventure Center in the basement of Hilltop Center.

  • Housing and Residence Life will host a sustainability fashion show, "Just Bag It," from 8-10 p.m. in the commons area of the Towers North residence hall.

  • "Zeitgeist: Moving Forward," a film by Peter Joseph, will screen at 6 p.m. in Schneider 100.

  • The WISPIRG Energy Service Corps will provide an energy savers workshop with Glen Fischer of Next Step Energy at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Room of Davies Center.

Thursday, April 21

  • A Sustainability Showcase featuring the following student organizations will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the campus mall: Student National Environmental Association, Conservationists, Foodlums, Hobnailers and the Environmental Adventure Center. Representatives from the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters and Producers, and the Buyers local food co-op also will be present.

  • "The Age of Stupid," a film starring Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite, will screen at 6 p.m. in Schneider 100.

Raffle tickets will be available April 19 and 21 for those who bike to the concert or engage with an organization exhibiting during the Sustainability Showcase. Raffle prizes include aluminum water bottles, biker headlights and a $50 Just Local Foods gift certificate.
