'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' to screen April 28-May 1

RELEASED: April 14, 2011

film graphicEAU CLAIRE — Clint Eastwood stars in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" (1966), screening April 28-May 1 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate will present the film at 6 and 9 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential, Sergio Leone's masterpiece is an engrossing Western shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Eastwood stars as the Man With No Name, teaming with two gunslingers (Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef) to pursue a cache of stolen Confederate gold. No one, not even opposing factions in the Civil War, will stand in their way.

"Leone's Westerns deepened the shadows of '50s films by John Ford, Anthony Mann and others to present a West where virtue never helped anyone survive," wrote the A.V. Club. "Such Westerns demanded a new kind of hero, and Leone found one in Clint Eastwood, a U.S. television star eager to pick up some extra work during the off season."

The 161-minute film is rated R.
